Find out how to “Milk the Purple Cow” at the April Meeting

Join us for our April meeting, where we will meet Barbara Tien, the self-described Ringleader of Projectkin. Barbara will share a talk titled, “Projects to Milk the Purple Cow in Your Family.” What does that mean? Come to the meeting and find out!

Description:

For so many of us toiling in the rabbit holes of Family History, we want—more than anything—our immediate and extended family to care about what we’ve discovered.

Here’s the thing: You need to milk the Purple Cow. The concept borrows from the legendary marketing man Seth Godin.

The simple idea is that you can’t ignore a Purple Cow. In this talk, Barbara will explain how this simple idea has fueled the family historians flocking to Projectkin.org. It’s not a platform or tool; it’s just a club of family historians hooked on stories. Members of Projectkin explore and share the many ways they’ve come up with to share their family stories — creatively. From a few paragraphs to elaborate ancestor-themed scavenger hunts, Projectkin dig into their family stories in new and creative ways. If creativity is what it takes to engage your extended family, that’s what they’re up to. It seems a good fit for the world of Second Life.

WHERE: The Barn  SLurl

Meet the Author of “Buried Secrets” at the November Meeting

Join us for our November meeting, where we will meet author Anne Hanson and learn about her book, Buried Secrets: Looking for Frank and Ida.

About the Book:

Ida Hanson hated when her sons left her sight. It was almost as if this fiercely protective mother, who sacrificed everything to nurture her four young boys during the economic ruin of the 1930s Great Depression, feared she might never see them again.

What happened in her earlier life to make this devoted mom, Anne’s grandmother, so afraid of losing her boys?

Anne Hanson’s book Buried Secrets: Looking for Frank and Ida is a real-life mystery about her quest to discover the hidden past that her grandparents Frank and Ida took to their graves. When she finally unearthed their real identities, she learned that their tales were lies invented to conceal disturbing facts. Buried Secrets is both a suspenseful drama and a true story about love, sacrifice, and family relationships. Its target audience is readers of suspense, memoir, and social history.

As well as being a tale of suspense, Buried Secrets celebrates love and family. Anne’s discoveries gave her dad the answers he had longed for his entire life. She helped to heal families that had been deeply wounded by Frank and Ida’s actions eighty years earlier. Buried Secrets explores a not-so-distant era when a young couple, thwarted by social conventions, could simply disappear and create new lives.

Genealogists of all levels are welcome at our meetings. You do not need to be a member of the SLVGS in order to attend, but we’d love it if you’d join!

About The Author

Anne Hanson, an inveterate explorer of the unknown, has always followed when her curiosity beckoned. She crossed the ocean for her African Studies degree, and as a reporter would drive endless miles across town to get the story. Finally, when investigating her grandparents’ secrets, she journeyed into a bygone century, her vehicle painstaking and detailed research. Anne has written for the Boston Globe and numerous newspapers, as well as for corporate publications and the New England Historic Genealogical Society’s American Ancestors magazine. She lives with her husband in Brookline, Massachusetts.
